Containing many never before published
photographs this book includes a brief history of the type, its
operational record and a description of the aircraft’s systems.
The story of how 48-178 was restored from the scrap-yard to
flying condition is detailed along with an index of the Sabre’s
variants and global users, of whom for many the F-86 was their
first experience of jet powered aircraft.
The ‘A’ model did not have the
refinement and excellence of later Sabres yet it is these very
idiosyncrasies exclusive to the earliest model that make it such
a special and unique aircraft. The author provides a rare
insight in to what it is like to fly and maintain this
legendary, historic and much cherished aircraft. A comparison
with the MiG-15, the Sabre’s deadly foe in Korea, the first
jet-age war, serves to illustrate the contrasting
state-of-the-art in the late 1940s between designers on either
side of the iron-curtain.
